The Boat
One of the last conversations I had with my dad occurred while he was in the hospital, just a few days before his passing. Although he was not himself as he was dazed from medication and sickness, it was one of our best:
Dad: Why’d you get on the boat?
Me (totally confused): What boat?
Dad: The boat.
Me (still confused, thinking he meant figuratively): The marriage boat?
Dad: No, the Love Boat.
Me (laughing to myself): We’re not on the Love Boat.
Dad: Oh…
Me: Did you think we were on the Love Boat?
Dad: Yeah…
Me: Do you want to be on the Love Boat?
Dad (very assuredly): No.
