Looking Forward to Wii

September 17th, 2006 Tagged with , |

I’ve been following the Nintendo news over the past few days. For those who aren’t as into it as I am, here’s the low-down:

  • Nintendo is releasing their new home console system, Wii, on Sunday November 19
  • Wii will be available for $249 and includes one controller set (a remote and a nunchuck attachment)
  • The Wii system will also include the Wii Sports game, which features bowling, baseball, tennis, golf, and boxing
  • New games available at launch include Zelda: Twilight Princess, Excite Truck, Red Steel, Madden NFL 07, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and more
  • You can play with your friends online for free
  • When you turn on the Wii, the main screen will have Wii Channels with features like a personalized avatar (called Mii), local weather, internet surfing, and more
  • Old-school Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and Nintendo 64 games will be available to download for $5, $8, and $10, respectively (sure beats the $74.99 we paid for Super Street Fighter II for Super Nintendo back in the day)

I think that’s probably the gist of it. So anywho, I’ve been looking at tons and tons of videos on IGN and around the internets, drolling over the innovation behind Nintendo’s new venture and wishing November 19 was sooner than later. The game that I’m most excited about is Zelda: Twilight Princess. Graphically, the game is beautiful. There are details in the littlest things, like Link’s hat, that just make me want to cry. This is the way Link should’ve been handled all along, Nintendo; thanks for finally catching up. ;)

The control scheme looks like it may take some getting used to - after all, we’re no longer just pushing a button to make Link move but, instead, we’re literally pointing his way to victory. It’s like the difference between using a keyboard and using a mouse - quite a difference indeed.

Check out the video below to see the new Zelda game in action.

This next video is the best Wii demo trailer I’ve seen, and sums it all up well.

  1. You know, I was pretty pumped about the Wii, but I just can’t convince myself that spending $250 on it would be a good idea at this point. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great system, but I would have been more comfortable with a $199 pricepoint. And I’m sorry, but the packing-in of Wii Sports does not make it any better.

  2. Wii Sports absolutely makes it better, for me at least. I was hoping for a $230 price for the Wii; since it’s now $250 but includes Wii Sports, a $40-50 game I planned on buying anyway for only $20 more than my desired Wii price, it’s absolutely worth it.
