Borat

Christina and I finally got around to watching Borat last night. There were definitely some parts that made me laugh like a school girl, and the movie is all-around enjoyable. I recommend it to all who love a good laugh, especially of the mockumentary stylings. While the movie as a whole was enjoyable, I don’t think it wasn’t as funny as “everyone” pumped it up to be. There were a few parts of the movie that could’ve been replaced, or enhanced, with some of the content in the deleted scenes that would’ve made it better. I truly appreciated the “authentic” look of the film quality on the DVD menu, intro, and outro screens, which looked like a Russian high school sex-ed video from the ’70s complete with Kazakhstanian/Russian credits dubbed over in English - very well done.

Highlights

I loved the naked hotel scene. Almost all of the deleted scenes were very funny, especially the cheese scene and the media’s spin on Borat’s rodeo experience. Also, lots of references to “making sexy time”.

Grades

Comedy: Yes, definitely. The movie is funny because of its candid documentary style, but there are some slapstick moments as well.
Drama: Nah.
Horror: What do you think of fat naked men?
Suspense: Nope.
Did it make me reconsider life? Completely unexpectedly, somewhat, yes - Borat got me thinking about things a bit. Borat certainly has many socio-political undertones that could really make you think about how we (Americans) live. How many kinds of cheese do we really need?

In Short

A very funny mockumentary that should make anyone with an open mind laugh, and maybe even think. Maybe. It’s not something that I’d watch over and over, but it’s definitely worth seeing.
