X-Men: The Last Stand

Supposedly the final movie of the X-Men live action franchise, X-Men: The Last Stand releases in theaters today, May 26th. Through my connections (Brent, that is) I was able to attend a full screening of the new flick just hours before it’s Thursday midnight/Friday morning release - bonus.

Any fan of the X-Men comic book series who comes into this movie expecting a real-life adaptation of the inked version, take heed; you absolutely cannot compare the movie to the comic. The only similarity are the characters and their powers. The story is an amalgam of several comic stories, but is also completely original. There’s no Madelyne Prior; there’s no trip to the moon. There are, however, lots of explosions; Wolverine hacking people to pieces; and mutant powers galore.

Wolverine is, of course, bad-ass

Although the movie is less than two hours, it’s packed full of goodness in just about every morsel. I think the first half hour or so is a little slow, but when things get rolling (especially when you see the power of Phoenix) the movie sucks you in and makes you want more.

The Brotherhood

I could go on and on about the movie, but I don’t want to ruin anything. It’s just something you need to experience for yourself, especially while it’s still in the theater (although I would recommend against sitting in the third row - it’s a bit too close). I’ll say this - there are lots of twists and surprises that most people would never expect. The extended DVD version of this film will be packed with deleted and alternate scenes, I assure you.

I don’t specifically remember this from the movie, but it’s a cool shot at least

If you enjoyed the first two X-Men movies, and you can have an open mind or simply don’t care about straying from the comic storyline, then this movie is a ‘must see.’ Honestly, it satisfied me as a fan in about every way possible. There are tons of mutant cameos, the plot is well organized, and there’s tons of action.

News around the internet, including cues from Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) himself, indicate that although this may be the last X-Men movie there are still plans to make both Wolverine and Magneto spin-offs.

“I have heard from people fairly high up — I am not saying as high as Rupert Murdoch but pretty close to it — kind of say that this is the end,” Jackman said. “But if you watch it to the end of the credits, there are a few teasers there.” {source}

As a comic book fan, this movie really hit the spot. I love the fact that the producers crammed in as much as they possibly could without getting ridiculous. Highly recommended.

My Experience: 9/10 - Must see!

(For the record - Peter Travers is an asshole.)
