Gas is expensive and Americans, in general, are lazy. So what can we do to rectify both problems with one stone? Ride bicycles. Bikes are an eco-friendly, healthy way to get to where you need to go as long as you live within reasonable distance. Portland is often referred to as the bicycling capital of the US, and for good reason - we have tons of trails around the area and practically every street has a seperate bike-only lane, making it convenient and easy to start riding.
Here’s the problem with the hardcore bicyclists - they don’t follow the rules. They go from street rules to pedestrian rules as they please, and that just ain’t cool. This morning I was reminded twice about why I don’t like bicyclists.
The first was at the traffic light by my work. I’m waiting to turn left, as is the bike in front of me. The light’s taking a while but since there’s no traffic coming our way, what does he do? Yeah, you guessed it - he rides across the street, blatantly disregarding the rules of the road. The bastard.
My second reminder was Dave Scriven’s blog in which he bragged about doing the very things I hate about hardcore bicyclists.
We might be moving soon and, to be honest, I’d love to live close enough to be able to bike to work. (Currently I’m about 20 miles out.) My beef with most bicyclists is, if you’re gonna ride in the street then follow the street rules; if you’re gonna ride on the sidewalk then follow the pedestrian rules. Just don’t go back and forth - not only does that shyte piss drivers off, but it could end up getting you hurt if you’re not paying enough attention. After all, that’s why we have traffic lights set up in the first place.
Dave had one good point, though - pedestrians are the enemy.

Get out of the GD street!
Hi. I'm Dean. Welcome to Dean(ish). I don't blog nearly as much as I used to, but I'm trying to get better. What do you expect when I have a full-time job, a wife, two kids, a cat, a fish, a leopard gecko, and a (semi-recently manifested) lack of creativity? At least I have a Twitter now. You can also check me out on Netvibes and Facebook. View my "complete" profile.

To be fair Dean our lives are in drivers hands. When I get frustrated I don’t have a 2-tonne what van in my control. We should be allowed to jump the lights
I think the problem is that there is no incentive to obey the rules (although I did read that a cyclist in London was fined for jumping the lights!). If more people were to cycle the rules would be enforced a little more.
In the ideal world there would be bike paths everywhere and we wouldnt need to go on the road. I hate being on them as much as the drivers hate me being there

I just want you to know that this morning, just for you, I didn’t jump any lights or go onto any pavements.
It’s so boring waiting in the lights! I don’t think I’ll be doing that again

I hate cyclists that ignore lights and other practical conventions. They make us decent cyclists look bad. Like late signalers do in cars.

If you’re lives are in motorists hands as you say, then gee, you (generic cyclists) should actually be careful and drop the arrogance about following traffic laws.
Take a clue from motorcyclists who could be really obnoxious but aren’t. I’ve noticed that motorcyclists understand that what they are doing is dangerous so they are careful and responsible. Also they seem to have a pride in personal responsibility and less of a stake in leftist political crusades and so don’t-in my experience-climb on the special beleagered victims’ bandwagon.
