Frolf and Working Out

Frolf Target

Frolf is awesome. André and I went frolfing today during lunch at Orchard Park, which is where we went on Saturday too. We’ve had beautiful weather here in Portland the last few days but it’s actually pretty cloudy today; it even sprinkled a little on our way back. Despite this offset, Dré and I had a good time. I think what I really like most about frolf is:

  • it’s a portable game - it can be played pretty much anywhere, anytime;
  • discs are reasonably cheap;
  • frolf parks are free.

I also really like the fact that I don’t have to take it seriously. There’s no threat to my “manhood” if I don’t do well because I know I’m not good yet. I’m not keeping score so I don’t worry about it. I’m just happy when I can throw the disc straight, at this point.

Dré and I are starting a new tradition - we’re gonna frolf every Wednesday during lunch. (I’m still getting used to the term “frolf.” It sounds like a sexual act - I assure you, it most definitely is not.) I’m still trying to decide between working out and frolfing on Mondays and Thursdays (those were supposed to be my workout days). I haven’t been to the gym in a month, but I really don’t miss it. I’m eating less (that is, more “normal” proportions), I’m drinking about 80% water (versus 60% soda), I feel more alert at work and I really feel better in general without working out. If I cancel my membership @ 24HF then my only regret will have been paying that ridiculous enrollment fee and not keeping the program long-term. It’s a tough choice; I just don’t think I can get back into going to the gym. Plus, we have Sierra now. (I signed up with 24HF a week before we found out we were getting her; had I known, I probably wouldn’t have.) And frolf. I have frolf now. While it’s certainly not a grueling workout by any means, it is at least some physical activity and, more importantly, I enjoy it. I want to frolf; I won’t really want to work out. Damn it. I guess that’s my decision then.

What do you think? What would you do?

  1. I love frolfin’, man. Gonna hit the “links” today after work. As for your dilemma, I’d say cancel the membership. Then again, I’m also a fat f**k (pardon my french), so I’m not the best person to ask. But, really, if you haven’t used it in a month, I don’t see the sense in paying for it.

  2. […] I’m in the middle on BJ’s scale as part of the 25% who went to college but never finished.  It seems so stupid to me that people never finish college; it’s almost the same logic as paying to join a gym and never going.  So in that regard, I’m stupid.  It’s not that I didn’t want to finish then, or that I don’t know - it’s a time struggle.  Once you put work before school, it’s really hard to get back into school.
